Betfred further expands into South Africa via LottoStar deal

British bookmaking giant Betfred has reportedly spent an unspecified amount of cash so as to purchase a majority shareholding in South African counterpart LottoStar Proprietary Limited.

According to a Friday report from a source, the Warrington-headquartered operator is already responsible for 53 retail wagering shops in South Africa and spent some $8.7 million in June of last year so as to acquire the online sportsbetting domain at BettingWorld.co.za after previous owner Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited filed for bankruptcy protections.

Established in 1967 by English entrepreneur Fred Done, Betfred currently operates well over 1,500 retail betting shops spread across the United Kingdom while its Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited subordinate is reportedly responsible for the online sportsbetting domain at Betfred.com. First Strip Club Sportsbook to Open in D.C. in Partnership with Elys Game Technology

The Cloakroom Gentlemen’s Club, a Washington D.C.-based strip club, publicly announced its intention to open a retail sportsbook in partnership with Toronto-based Elys Game Technology, called the Over Under Sportsbook Rooftop Lounge, this week in the nation’s capital, while proclaiming itself as the first sportsbook within such a venue in the US.

To launch the first strip club sportsbook in the US, Cloakroom Gentlemen’s Club has partnered with the global interactive gaming and sports betting technology company. Their joint venture, Cloakbook, was granted a sports betting license on Tuesday, December 27.

In a press release, Tony Cavasilios, managing member of Cloakbook, said: “We are eagerly looking forward to commencing our sportsbook operations within the Cloakroom and all-new Over Under lounge on the rooftop above the club, and to provide a whole new experience to our patrons in D.C.”.

Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax (and its subsidiaries at Bethesda) has now been completed, which means ZeniMax’s board of directors has been dissolved.

Pete Hines, the senior vice president of global marketing and communications at Bethesda, told GameSpot in an email, “The prior ZeniMax Media Board of Directors has been dissolved.”

This is not an unusual or troubling development but instead a standard practice for an acquisition like this.

ZeniMax’s board was composed of a variety of executives and celebrities from multiple industries, including Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, big-name entertainment attorney Ernest Del, former MLB superstar Cal Ripken Jr., former CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, and former MGM CEO Harry Sloan.
